An uncomfortable reality has been exercising my thoughts in recent months: No matter how you measure it, growth among NSW/ACT Baptists is not keeping pace with population growth. The size of our movement is declining in real terms, notwithstanding the health and growth that is present in a number of our churches.
I don’t like the stats much, but I can’t ignore them. I don’t think any of us can. It forces us to ask the hard question, ‘How are we doing at being a movement of churches who live and breathe the mission of Jesus?’ What is very encouraging is the way God seems to be stirring among us a desire to face our reality honestly, and seek God’s way forward with new energy. Our Baptist heritage is one of passionate commitment to the gospel of Jesus and its ability to change lives. I see that spirit at work in the development of Directions 2012.
Directions 2012 is essentially about mission. The revitalisation of governance structures, the focus on building healthy pastoral leadership, the re-affirmation of our Baptist identity, and the challenge to use our resources more strategically, all must have at their heart the one aim: to propel our movement forward in the mission of making disciples.
